Top-seeded Dalhausser and Rogers beat second-seeded John Hyden and Sean Scott, 18-21, 21-15, 15-9, in the final. After shoping we tried the local durian fruit–even when the locals cautioned us against it! We sampled the local cuisine: chili crab, chicken & rice, nasi lemak (coconut rice), satay, ba kut teh (pork ribs), and fried hokkien mee (fried noodle with prawn). And my absolute favorite food–Kaya Toast. Sun, 5 July 2009  We hang with Shaun White at Skate Cayman in the Cayman Islands. Shaun is an Olympic Gold Medalist and has won more X Games than you can count. Shaun was in town to tear up one of the biggest and baddest skate parks in the world- The Black Pearl. He also had a chance to teach the kids some tricks as you can see. Shaun is a jetSetter himself and he shares some of his favorite spots on the island and abroad.journeyPod are big fans of the Cayman Islands, so it was a nice bonus to checkout the park which offers 52,000 square feet of challenging concrete curves to satify any skater. A trip to the touristy town of Ao Nang brings back memories of Nha Trang, Vietnam. The best “local” dessert is mango sticky rice, or kao neaw ma mung. It’s delicious and fattening! And try the Pad Thai at Ao Nang Cuisine. We had a chance to catch up with winner of Food Network's "Iron Chef America" - Michelle Bernstein-Martinez. Michelle's unique approach to "luxurious approachable food" has made her namesake restaurant, Michy's, a fiery success. Michelle has also made a splash with her Spanish-style tapas at Sra. Martinez, the intimate Michelle's at Carysfort and MB at the Aqua Hotel in Cancun. Fri, 9 January 2009  Santa Barbara lies on the West Coast of the United States, 92 miles north of Los Angeles and 332 miles south of San Francisco. The area is famous for its beautiful beaches, most of which lie along a unique south-facing stretch of coastline that affords beach visitors sun all day long and greater shelter from winds and surf. But there's far more here than beaches. Not to miss spots include: Front Street, the Santa Barbara County Historic Courthouse, the Santa Barbara Mission. Santa Barbara is a very walkable city. You can get everywhere you need to go via foot, the trolley, or public transportation! journeyPod actually took the train—gotta love Amtrak—from Los Angeles. After two hours sipping a nice bottle of Pinot we brought along, the train stopped in the center of downtown Santa Barbara. We walked about seven minutes to our hotel—Hotel Oceana Santa Barbara. Fri, 28 December 2007  Located around the corner from Grand Central Station in New York City is a hidden gem called The WheelTapper Pub. Here’s a trivia question for you... what is a “wheeltapper"? If you’re thinking this is “just another Irish Pub,? have we got a surprise for you! I mean, seriously, how many Irish Pub’s have a AAA 5-Diamond Rating?! If that doesn’t do it for you, we can mention that it has close to one million dollars in authentic Irish rail system artifacts scattered throughout the inside and outside areas. The bar was even brought over from Ireland--piece by piece! And don’t think everything about this Pub is old-school, it has certainly embraced technology by installing monitors that communicate the train schedules from Grand Central Station, real-time. So if your train is running seven minutes late, you can relax and enjoy that Guinness, instead of slamming it down... journeyPod enjoyed a traditional Irish breakfast, complete with white and black pudding (I must admit, I didn’t know “pudding? wasn’t pudding--boy was I shocked!) Held at venues along the stunning San Diego waterfront, the Festival was a sizzling five-day festa that offered attendees everything from cooking classes with celebrity chefs, to wine tastings with Master Sommeliers, to a Reserve Tasting aboard the Hornblower’s Inspiration, and the Final Grand Event --where over 800 wines were poured.journeyPod caught up with some of the movers and shakers at the festival. Maureen Petrosky was our sommelier for this tasting and taught us about pairing rieslings and riojas with meats, shrimp, chocolate and peppers. We were surprised to learn that sparkling wine goes extremely well with hot wings..something for the ladies to remember during football season! Among many other titles, Maureen was named "Female Chef Extroardinaire" by the International Organization, Les Marmitons, and was a recent judge on Iron Chef America. If you look closely up to the hills, you see the most famous landmark of Hollywood—the Hollywood sign!If you’re in the mood to see the latest Disney or Pixar film, you’ll find many theatres in and around Hollywood, but if you want to EXPERIENCE a movie, head over to the El Capitan Theatre. This historic landmark is THE place to see a movie—and even see a celeb at their premiere! journeyPod was given the royal treatment that included a private tour with the executive director, Ed Collins. We learned some inside scoop and then had VIP seats (that included popcorn and soda!) for the new Disney film, Ratatouille. There is no other way to see a movie! We’re believers now! Wed, 15 August 2007  When you think of Rock-n-roll music - The Doors, Led Zepelin, Guns-n-Roses may come to mind. One of the unique things about these bands is that they all started off in West Hollywood, playing at many clubs on Sunset Strip. If you are visiting Los Angeles, you owe yourself a trip to this iconic street. So much history and so many stories...if only the sidewalks could talk. Some of these "glamorous" nightclubs from the 60's,70's and 80's are still around- The Whisky, for example, is where The Doors started as a house band in the late 60's. And speaking of stories, The Hyatt on Sunset, better known as "The Riot House" has many stories to tell. If you want to stay at one hotel with history - you gotta stay here! The notorious hotel is currently going through a major renovation- which includes replacing the notorious balconies - that's right no more balconies for Axl Rose to BBQ from and then throw steaks at the people walking below (true story from 1986). journeyPod had the opportunity to tour this iconic property as is - before the renovation. We were also fortunate to stay in the famed Suite 905 - also known as the "Robert Plant Suite" - one of the most photographed suites in Hollywood. Photographers are happy just to get a picture of the outside of the door. Apparently in 1975 Robert Plant was quoted saying, "I am a golden god!" from the balcony during an interview. Mon, 6 August 2007  The second annual LA Wine Fest floated into Held on The Queen Mary, more than 110 wineries participated in this gala event. Food to complement the wine was provided by some of the area's most intriguing restaurants, including: L'Opera Ristorante, and La Creperie. During the event sommelier and wine making programs were hosted as well. These symposiums offered an interesting education on the world of wines for both the novice and knowledgeable wine enthusiasts. LA Wine Fest benefits the Hollywood Wilshire YMCA and in preparing to assist a campaign for the Children's Tumor Foundation. journeyPod had the unique opportunity to walk the Ballroom of the Queen Mary with the event organizer, Joel Fisher. Secluded beaches and charming resorts make this area the best secret in Mexico. We stayed right on the beach in Playa del Carmen at the amazing Shangri-La Caribe Beach Village Resort. Their palapas are right on the sand and steps from the ocean waves! The staff was great and the food was authentic Mayan and quite tasty. Playa is Bohemian and has a great vibe. Everyone is quite friendly and the experience is very relaxing compared to the hustle and bustle of Cancun about 45 minutes away.
